Frequently asked questions about background musicHow loud will the music be? The short answer is "as loud as you want it". But as a general rule, we recommend that the music should be loud enough to be heard, whilst not being so loud as to intrude upon the conversation of your guests. The "right" choice will depend on your own taste, of course, though the number of guests you are expecting is important too - see below. What would you suggest for a small wedding (ie up to about 100 guests)? If you want very gentle background music, and particularly if you like classical music, a harpist would be ideal. On the other hand, if you'd prefer something a bit more upbeat, how about a ragtime pianist, or a flamenco/jazz guitar duo? Or perhaps a trad jazz trio ("When the saints go marching in" etc)? What would be suitable for weddings with a larger number of guests? A string quartet is a perennially popular choice for larger weddings, and with good reason. A quartet has a very wide repertoire ranging from classical to jazz and, requiring no electricity, can easily be moved from place to place - useful if the weather turns!
