Certain religious words and music to be allowed at civil ceremonies?
News posted 2005-06-13
Poetry, readings and pop songs with religious references could be allowed at civil weddings under proposals due to be published soon. The current law bans religious references, but the Office of National Statistics has reviewed it. The Times today, 13 June, has reported that readings and songs with "an incidental reference to a god or deity in an essentially non-religious context" could be allowed. The Office of National Statistics said consultation would begin shortly.

Schubert's "Ave Maria"? Only if you want it...

"Ave Maria" is a perenially popular choice, but did you know that there are dozens of different versions of these lovely words? And don't forget versions by Josquin, Saint-Saens, Liszt, Monteverdi, Dvorak and, of course, Gounod's arrangement as an "Ave Maria" of JS Bach's Prelude No.1 from his 48 Preludes & Fugues, to name just a few. Which one's right for you? Call us for expert advice on this and all other choral matters!

Couples could get married in the church of their choice under new plans to be considered by the Church of England.
News posted 2004-07-09
The General Synod is considering relaxing the rules that say the bride or groom must live or worship in a parish in order to use its church. Couples who wish to marry in a parish where neither one lives or worships must currently seek a special licence, but the Synod - the Church of England's governing body - has already given its backing to a "demonstrable connection" option, which would allow people to get married in parishes with which they have a strong connection (eg if either party were born or brought up there). It is also considering relaxing the law further, and permitting couples to get married in whichever church they like, even one with which they do not have a ?demonstrable connection?. However, any changes agreed by the Synod are unlikely to be introduced until 2007, after a government review of civil registration ceremonies.
