Signing the register

Here are some ideas for music for use during the signing of the register:

  • Bach JS - Air on the G string (sound link)
  • Massanet J - Meditation, from 'Thais'
  • Elgar E - Chanson de matin
  • Handel GF - Air from 'The Water Music'
  • Delibes L - Dome épais (sound link), from 'Lakmé'
  • Pachelbel J - Canon in D (sound link)
  • Mozart WA - Movements from 'Divertimenti, K136-138'

At a civil wedding, the bridal couple normally sign the register in front of their guests, in the same room in which the wedding has taken place. No disappearing off into a vestry!

This therefore means that you'll probably only need to select one piece, and not a terribly long one at that. Furthermore, the music you choose should generally be fairly gentle, so as to contrast well with your recessional (and also so you can hear the Registrar's instructions - not always possible if you've got a group of musicians blasting away with something spirited!).

The pieces above would generally be played by a solo pianist or a string quartet, though some can be played by other musicians too, such as a harpist or guitarist.
