We suggest that, as a rule of thumb, background music should be loud enough to be heard, but not so loud as to intrude – and the right level will normally depend on the number of guests you’re expecting. For an intimate wedding, a solo musician (eg a harpist or pianist) is normally ideal – whereas at a larger wedding, a soloist would be lost without amplification, and so a trio or quartet might be a better option.
If you’re hoping to hold your reception outdoors, the notoriously unreliable British weather means that it’s sensible to go for musicians who can play unamplified, such that they can move indoors easily at the first sign of rain. And if you need musicians to play outside, don’t forget that most musicians will require a solid, stable surface on which to set-up, as well as shade from bright direct sunlight, which can damage expensive instruments.
Lastly, do remember that most background musicians/ensembles can move from one location to another in a matter of minutes, so it’s often possible to have the same musician(s) playing for the drinks reception and the beginning of the wedding breakfast.
